A good friend of mine just recently became a dad. We had not spoken for quite some time, but through social media channels, it was clear that much in his life had changed. He found a partner to settle down with and one special enough to share the joy of creating life. I was very happy for him because he seemed to be starting a very special chapter in his life.
Near the eve of his daughter’s first birthday he had reached out to me to connect one-on-one. The timing being at the height of COVID lockdowns and such, I was not only eager to connect with him via Zoom, I was elated that he had reached out to me to chat. It was somewhat “out-of-the-blue”, but I was happy to hear from my friend.
It was great to connect with my friend. I remember introducing him to backpacking and exposing him to backcountry travel and I feel like this left quite an impression on him, because although during our re-connect we talked about many things (politics, religion, the meaning of life, etc.), the biggest topic on his mind (and his reason for reaching out in the first place) was one coming from a new dad, which was, “When do you start exposing kids to wilderness, backcountry, deep nature and the like?” If you’ve read any of my posts, you probably know the answer that I gave. In keep with the tradition of my “How to Travel with Kids” blog-storm, I fell back on my How to Travel with Kids – Rule #1…start early and often. That’s when you expose kids to wilderness, backcountry, deep nature or otherwise. The answer is always “Early and Often”. The only thing you want to make sure is that IT’S FUN. That’s your job as a parent. MAKE IT FUN!!!
If you want to raise little shredders, it’s only going to work if they think it’s FUN. If you make it about fun above all else, then they’re ALL IN no matter what. If you start early and often, and make if fun along the way, you will undoubtedly raise the most epic of little shredders that are full-throttle about epic experiences that no video game on the planet will be able to match.
